SF Hula Dance Company Requirements
The SF Hula Dancers are a group of men and women, most of Polynesian decent, but all with a passion for Polynesian dance and a desire to share that dance with others through performance. Dancers are chosen based on the following criteria:
(a) Commitment to Training and Development:
No matter how good you are, you can always get better, and no matter how experienced you are, there's always more to learn. Dancers practice 2-4 times a week with the group during their first three months with the company to acclimate themselves to the dance style, choreography and the other dancers. After the three month training period, dancers are not allowed to perform until their dances are performance-ready. Once dancers are performing, they're required to practice with the group a minimum of once a week. If a dancer misses practice for any extended period of time (more than one week), they are unable to perform until they've returned to practice and proven that they're still "performance ready."
(b) Commitment to Professionalism, Responsibility and Communication:
Dancers are reminded that performances are a team effort and are strongly encouraged to put their love of dance, enjoyment for entertainment and commitment to excellent performance above all else when they're engaged in SF Hula activities. When one fails, we all fail. When we are all excellent, we all succeed. Open, constructive communication is nurtured and encouraged while negativity, unconstructive criticism and lack of communication is absolutely not permitted.
(c) Commitment to Fellow Dancers and, most of all, the Customers:
If we wanted to dance for only ourselves, we could dance in our living rooms. If not for our fellow dancers and our audiences, we'd have nobody to share our artform with - and the sharing of it is really the most important thing of all!
